Description

Only 1.3% of all teachers in US public schools identify as Black men. He is Me Institute acts on the urgency of making systemic changes so that all students can benefit from the impact that Black male teachers have on their success.

The He is Me Fellowship provides Black male college students with an affinity space to explore their shared identity and the significant impact of Black males in education.

Over the course of the year, Fellows will…

Experience a Black-centered curriculum
Understand how to leverage their identity to teach and empower youth
Develop transferable career skills such as facilitation and collaboration
Be better positioned to grow, learn, and further their education

The 11-month program gives Fellows an opportunity to build community through engaging in affinity-based learning and includes:

Completing asynchronous learning modules
Engaging in deeper learning and connection in monthly virtual seminars
Optional school-based teaching experiences
Invitation and accommodations to attend the Future Teacher Institute at Shady Hill Teacher Training Center in Cambridge, MA.
Earning the He is Me Institute Future Teacher Certificate

What Do He is Me Fellows Do?

Asynchronous Learning Modules: Fellows will engage in weekly asynchronous learning modules to unpack their own identities and reflect on the intersection between their identities, their experiences as students, and the impact that they could have as Black male teachers. Each module takes about 45 minutes to complete.

Monthly Online Seminars: Fellows will engage in monthly 90-minute seminars with their cohort to deepen understanding and apply knowledge by contributing to discussion-based reflections to the learning modules.

Paid Teaching Opportunities (optional): Fellows are connected with He is Me partners for more authentic in-person teaching experiences such as facilitating after-school and summer programs.

Future Teacher Institute (optional): Fellows are invited to attend the 2-day Future Teacher Institute at the Shady Hill Teacher Training Center in Cambridge, MA. Fellows are provided transportation, housing, meals, and registration to attend in January or February.

Eligibility Requirements

Fellows are Black male college students enrolled in an undergraduate degree-granting program at partnering college institutions. While an education major is not required, experience and a demonstrated interest in pursuing the teaching profession are preferred.

Future Teacher Certificate

Graduates of the He is Me Fellowship will earn a Future Teacher certificate from He is Me Institute. The Future Teacher Certificate aims to recognize Fellows’ intellectual and personal development- in addition to their competency for school-based job opportunities and formal teacher training.

He is Me Alumni Network
Become a lifelong learner. Upon completion of the Fellowship, alumni gain permanent access to the He is Me Alumni Network, which includes:

regular access to school-based job postings (including summer and after-school programs)
virtual and in-person affinity spaces for Black males
networking opportunities with graduate and teaching certification programs
professional development and mentorship opportunities
opportunities to attend conferences and other events for current and aspiring Black male teachers.

Cost

Tuition is covered by our partnering institutions. There are no costs assessed directly to Fellows.
