About He Is Me Institute

Founded in 2018, the mission of He is Me Institute is to empower Black men to obtain and retain careers in education.

To increase the number of Black male educators, education institutions must rethink how they recruit, retain, and retire Black men. Specifically, Black males must:
  1. Experience Black male educators during their K-12 career,
  2. Get exposure to the teaching profession by serving as mentors or tutors,
  3. Explore their own identities to learn how they can impact students,
  4. Expand their technical and adaptive skills before and during their teaching career.
Everything that we do is rooted in Black males becoming and remaining teachers, including the K-12 boys in our mentor program, to the career educators in our Black Male Teacher Network.

Our Education Equity Initiative develops ecosystems to sustain local pipelines that provide educational entities with the tools, skills, and resources to facilitate the "4E's" with the Black males who interact with their institutions.

Our partners engage with us by:
  • Investing in Black male teachers to coordinate the implementation of the I AM KING program for K-12 boys of color, which are facilitated by local Black male college students
  • Teaching or enrolling students in the He is Me Fellowship centered on identity, culture, and education
  • Providing development, educational, and career opportunities to our participants who complete a certification and practicum experience with us
